AB1202: Brutalist Architecture in Los Angeles

This project to collect and document the specimens of Brutalist Architecture in Los Angeles has taken the form of an open-source Google map and is still a work in progress. The projects have been selected and identified primarily by James Black and Mike Sweeney.

For the sake of this exercise, I have proposed a working definition of Brutalist Architecture as buildings with an exposed, unpainted, cast-in-place structure of architectural concrete. In the interest of inclusiveness and in recognition of the multiple and overlapping definitions of Brutalism, the map is open to including buildings that are Brutalist in spirit but do not meet the strict definition above, including buildings clad in pre-cast concrete.

Contact James Black to be added as a “contributor,” which will allow you to edit the map and add new entries.
